Bike Week - Avoiding pain and discomfort while cycling. A guest post by Physiokinesis sponsored GB Triathlete, Alex Jones.

After three years of being in Triathlon I have clocked up many hours on the bike, both on the road and TT frames.  Through this I have learned where money, time and effort is best spent.

Several people have mentioned to me that they find themselves being very uncomfortable on a bike. They complain about the saddle, their knees and back. Some of the best money I have spent on my biking experience has been improving the way I feel on a bike, not through super expensive, wheels, power meters and carbon upgrades.

In terms of bicycle parts worth investing in, a good saddle that suits you is an essential. If you are not comfortable on your current saddle and find yourself moving around you are wasting energy and causing even more discomfort than doing the actual cycling part itself. From a TT point of view when aerodynamics is key you certainly don't want to be constantly moving!

Another good investment that many cyclists will agree with, is a bike fit.

A bike fit will help you find the most comfortable or most aerodynamic position you can be in.

Often I hear and see people with incorrect saddle height causing knee and back pain as well as some others with really bad handle bar positions which causes them to grip the handles in a bad way.

Having a bike fit will work out whether you are effected by any of these issues. For those looking to be more aerodynamic on their bike, this will also show you how.

By learning where you need to become more mobile/flexible and then just putting in the time and work, you can achieve it.
