Acupuncture - The Science Bit

At the skin level, Acupuncture produces ATP which converts into Adenosine which widens the blood vessels (Vasodilation). 


So if you see red around the needle, that's Vasodilation.

In addition, whatever segment of spine the needle corresponds to gets an opiate boost (ie feel good chemicals).

















Finally the brain joins in and the Limbic System gets involved which is responsible for mood and instinct.  Here our basic emotions are "aroused" for example fear, pleasure or anger.

Opiates are released which stimulate the "pleasure centres".
